Unit blk. of W. Wyatt Ave. 04-27/ 4:30 p.m. A 48-year-old Alexandria man was shot and killed by Alexandria police after the man pointed a handgun at police.

Yesterday afternoon, Lewis W. Barber exited his home in the unit block of West Wyatt Avenue where he had been holding his 9-year-old son hostage for nearly 20 hours. Barber came out on his porch, brandished a handgun and pointed it at police. It was then that police fired and Barber collapsed.

Officers immediately entered the home and located the boy, unharmed, inside. Barber was taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m.

On Tuesday evening, Barber abducted his son at gunpoint in the 1300 block of King Street in the presence of the boy's mother, Barber's estranged wife. Barber took the boy to his home on West Wyatt Avenue and held him hostage overnight and throughout the day.

Police are conducting both internal and criminal investigations into the shooting.


Unit blk. of Dale St. 04-26/ 9:10 p.m. The victim, a 24-year-old Arlington man, was approached from behind and knocked to the ground. Four suspects assaulted the victim and robbed him of money. The suspects then fled. They are described as black males, 16-20 years old, 5'8"-6', and wearing dark clothing. The victim refused medical treatment.


3600 blk. of Edison St. 04-27/ between 6:00 a.m. and 3:50 p.m. Someone gained entry to the residence by undetermined means. Once inside, the suspect stole electronic equipment.

2700 blk. of Eisenhower Ave. 04-26/ between 7:55 p.m. and 10:04 p.m. Someone gained entry to the hotel room by undetermined means. Once inside, the suspect stole computer equipment.


5000 blk. of Fillmore Ave. 04-22/ 2:45 a.m. - 04-25/ 4:30 p.m. Stolen: 1997 Ford Crown Victoria, 4 door, blue.
