On Tuesday, Alexandria police arrested Andrew V. Zavarella, 29, and charged him with Robbery-Carjacking for carjacking an SUV the day before. On Monday, around 4:30 p.m., Zavarella forced a 48-year-old Maryland woman out of her 2001 Toyota 4Runner and then drove away. An off-duty officer spotted the car and reported its location to headquarters. Officers located the car as the suspect approached I-395 near Shirlington and initiated a pursuit. The suspect did not stop and the pursuit continued north on I-395. The pursuit was terminated when it reached the 14th Street Bridge. The suspect continued across the bridge, colliding into several cars as he continued to flee. None of the drivers of the other cars was seriously injured. The wrecked vehicle was later located approximately three blocks away. Through further investigation, detectives determined that Zavarella, a resident of 2727 Duke Street, Apt 206, was the suspect and arrested him. He is scheduled to have an advisement in General District Court this morning.
