| Carlyle House Historic Park Gardens
in the Spring. When originally built in 1753, John Carlyle's House
was on the waterfront, and it was the grandest mansion in the new
town of Alexandria. Tours of this historic house focus on the social
history of colonial Alexandria, with special emphasis on John Carlyle
and his family . |
Built in 1863 by the Champion Co., in continuous
service until 1917. While in use in Alexandria, won a pumper competition
in 1893 in Fredrick Md. In 8 min. and 10 sec., from a cold boiler,
succeeded in throwing water 108 ft. in a continuous stream. The
"pink thing" in the right corner is a pressure chamber
which allowed the pumper to build up steam quickly.

on the Avenue" celebrations on Mt. Vernon Avenue
promote the City's rich cultural diversity.

| The Beatley Central Library is the main reference
facility of the Alexandria Library. Designed by Pierce Goodwin Alexander
& Linville in association with Michael Graves, Architect. The
library opened on January 31, 2000. |
Alexandria is the home town of George Washington,
and the City celebrates the birthday of the nation's first president
with a parade every February. The City also hosts the Christmas
Walk, celebrating the City's Scottish heritage in December,
and the St. Patrick's Day Parade in March.

The Alexandria Farmer's
Market, the oldest continuously operating farmer's market
in the U.S., opens at 6 a.m. every Saturday on Market Square adjacent
to City Hall.

Alexandria is served by an array
of transportation facilities, including National
Airport, the newly renovated Union Station, Metrorail stations at
Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue and Van Dorn Street,
and an extensive network of bicycle trails.
