"Art on the Avenue"
Fire Pump
Arts on the Avenue
Carlyle House Historic Park Gardens in the Spring. When originally built in 1753, John Carlyle's House was on the waterfront, and it was the grandest mansion in the new town of Alexandria. Tours of this historic house focus on the social history of colonial Alexandria, with special emphasis on John Carlyle and his family . Built in 1863 by the Champion Co., in continuous service until 1917. While in use in Alexandria, won a pumper competition in 1893 in Fredrick Md. In 8 min. and 10 sec., from a cold boiler, succeeded in throwing water 108 ft. in a continuous stream. The "pink thing" in the right corner is a pressure chamber which allowed the pumper to build up steam quickly.

The annual "Art on the Avenue" celebrations on Mt. Vernon Avenue promote the City's rich cultural diversity.
