Purchasing Data

The City of Alexandria’s GIS Division manages the City’s vast and detailed geographic information database. The City recognizes that this information can be very useful to the public as well for many purposes and therefore publishes it semi-annually on CD for a $50 fee (the approximate cost to produce the disk). To fully utilize this information most users will need some GIS experience along with appropriate GIS software. As a convenience, the GIS Data CD includes a free third-party viewer (ArcExplorer). Users without access to GIS software will need to determine if the viewer is suitable to meet their specific needs. One of the known limitations of the viewer is its inability to read the City’s aerial photography in the compressed format in which it is provided (MrSID compression). The CD includes a link to decompression software (Lizard Tech ExpressViewer Browser Plug-in), but the process of decompressing can be time-consuming. Many needs can be addressed without purchasing the GIS Data CD. Those who are interested in basic geographic information or maps of the City are encouraged to visit our Standard Maps Page or our Interactive Maps page, where all of the City’s most popular maps can be found.
