Transportation

Alexandria is served by Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (five to ten minutes from Old Town) and by Dulles International and Baltimore/Washington International Airports (both about 40 minutes away). All major domestic and international carriers service these airports. The City has its own Amtrak station and is served by Metro and its own DASH buses.

METRORAIL SUBWAY

Alexandria has four convenient subway locations: Braddock Road (Yellow Line) Eisenhower Avenue (Yellow Line) King Street (Yellow Line and Blue Line) Van Dorn Street (Blue Line).

Hours of operation:
  • Metro operates seven days a week.
  • Rail stations open at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays and at 8 a.m. on weekends.
  • Metrorail closes at midnight (1 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays) except for special events such as the annual 4th of July fireworks display when hours are extended.
  • When traveling late at night, be sure to check the scheduled departure time for the last train. At many stations, the last train departs before midnight so it is important that you allow enough time to enter the system and board the train. Last train departure times are posted at each station kiosk.

For a map with links to each metro station see the Metrorail system map. For on-line route planning, try the Ride Guide.
