Mentor the Titans - A conference on mentoring Alexandria's youth.
Are you looking for a purposeful way to start the new year? How about mentoring a child here in the City of Alexandria. The Alexandria Mentoring Partnership (AMP) invites those interested in learning more about mentoring as well as current mentors to Alexandria's inaugural mentoring conference on January 26th from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., at the Minnie Howard School, 3801 West Braddock Road. THE CONFERENCE IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. The event will include a showcase of poetry, art, and movies by youth along with workshops for current mentors and a special keynote speaker. Dinner will be provided.
Workshops for Current Mentors:
- Gang, pregnancy, and substance abuse prevention: The coordinators of Alexandria's Gang Prevention Task Force (Mike Mackey) and Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (Noraine Buttar) will present methods for preventing and intervening in risky behaviors that may be tempting your mentees.
- Resources for navigating the Alexandria School system: Hear from Alexandria City Schools' Principal On-Assignment, Grace Taylor, about how to be an advocate for your mentee to teachers, principals, and counselors in ACPS. This session will also include an overview of the school's curriculum from elementary to high school.
- Books and Resources for supporting youth: Leigh Hoyer, the coordinator for Alexandria's Wright-to-Read program will provide resources, suggested materials and books for supporting your mentees on a variety of different issues including peer-pressure, grieving/loss, understanding divorce, etc.
- Relationship-Building 101: Need tips on how to engage a bored mentee? Want to learn how to better connect to youth culture? Feel like you need ideas on how to get to know your mentee better? This session will provide tips and best practices for just that as well as the opportunity to collaborate with other mentors on what has worked (and what hasn't worked) for them in the past.
