Alexandria Commission for the Arts Schedules Public Hearing on Public Art to Honor Charles Houston

City of Alexandria Commission for the Arts Announces “Call to Artists” for the Creation of the 2008 Alex Awards

The City of Alexandria Commission for the Arts announces a “Call to Artists” for the creation of the 2008 Alex Awards. Artists, who either work or live in the City, are asked to submit a proposal for up to five art pieces. All proposals must be submitted to the Alexandria Commission for the Arts’ office (1108 Jefferson St.) by the close of business on Wednesday, June 6. The theme of the 2008 Alex Awards is “The Global Arts in Alexandria,” and the artwork created for the award should evoke this theme. Artist(s) will be compensated $500 for each work chosen. The City’s Alexandria Commission for the Arts invites the public to attend Agenda Alexandria’s “Public Art: What is it? How Much Do We Want? Who Pays for It?” on Monday, April 28, at the Holiday Inn Eisenhower Metro Station (2460 Eisenhower Ave.). The program begins with a reception and buffet at 6:30 p.m., and a panel discussion beginning at 7:15 p.m. The cost of admission for the reception and buffet is $20 for Agenda Alexandria members and $25 for non-members or members without reservations. Nominations of Alexandria Artists and Art Organizations Encouraged for the “Governor’s Awards For The Arts”

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts encourages the public to nominate Alexandria artists and art organizations for the Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008. The awards recognize outstanding lifetime achievement by Virginia artists, art organizations and individuals who support and encourage the arts. Governor Timothy M. The City of Alexandria will observe the Days of Remembrance, Yom HaShoah, for the victims of the Holocaust at noon on Tuesday, April 29, in Market Square, 301 King St. The Alexandria City Council hosts the annual ceremony as part of the weeklong commemoration of the national Days of Remembrance, Sunday, April 27, through Sunday, May 4. This is the 21st consecutive year that the City has held the Days of Remembrance ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. The Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Alexandria a 2007 Tree City USA community in honor of the City’s commitment to community forestry. It is the 25th year the City has received this national recognition. Alexandria Students Experience Virginia General Assembly First-Hand

Eight Alexandria students visited the Virginia General Assembly and met with their state representatives during 4-H State Capitol Day on Thursday, February 7. The students, Brian Anderson, Jamilla Banks, Lorrussia Brocket, Marcus Brown, Ronnell Cooper, Tiroune Oates, Isaiah Redfearn-Riley and Ebony Roberts, represented the City because of their outstanding participation in 4-H programs in 2007. The event, sponsored by Virginia 4-H, provides an opportunity for 4-Hers across the Commonwealth to learn how the legislative branch of government works and to express appreciation to their state legislators for their support of 4-H youth development activities. The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will pilot the use of Visa and Mastercard credit card payments for Web registration of classes and camps. Effective March 1, patrons with a current household ID may make credit card payments for classes offered during the winter session. Individuals wishing to register for spring and summer classes and camps may also make credit card payments when registration opens for the spring session at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 17. A household ID is required for individuals to register for recreation classes and camps; those without a current household ID may request one by calling Chinquapin Park Recreation Center Program Office at 703.519.2160. The City of Alexandria’s Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center, located at 5750 Sanger Ave., will offer a weeklong nature day camp for youth ages 7 to 10. The camp is scheduled from March 17-21, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Campers will participate in fun, nature-based learning activities, including woodland hikes, live animal exhibitions, journaling, story time, and nature games and crafts. Campers may be dropped off at 8:30 a.m. The camp fee is $275 for City residents ($300 for nonresidents) for the entire week. City of Alexandria Acquires Second Property for Pocket Park Program

The City of Alexandria has entered into an agreement to purchase the property at 1& 7 East Del Ray Avenue, the second parcel the City has acquired for its Pocket Park Program since it was approved by City Council in March 2005. In celebration of Virginia Arts Advocacy Day today, the City of Alexandria’s Commission for the Arts is pleased to announce the results of the most comprehensive economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the United States. Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit arts organization based in New York City, conducted the study, Arts & Economic Prosperity III. Alexandria City Council Approves Van Alstine Sculpture Donation

Yesterday, the Alexandria City Council approved the Alexandria Sculpture Festival donation by John Van Alstine. The sculpture, “Sacandaga Totem,” is a rough cut, granite obelisk with four heavy steel fins bolted at the base and welded to a steel plate. The sculpture measures 113 inches high x 66 inches wide x 43 inches deep, and weighs 5,000 pounds. Van Alstine, who lives in New York, has exhibited widely in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
